Healthcare Technology Trends Will Improve the Patient Experience in 2021 and Beyond

With a computer in everyone’s pocket, we have come to love convenience above all.

Patients, too, have come to expect a certain level of convenience regarding their health care. With the advent of patient portals and wearable health trackers providing that ease, it’s becoming harder for healthcare providers to offer that ease. But fret not. We have compiled trends that will help you achieve better customer satisfaction and ensure that you are well equipped for the future. Fortunately for you, there are many innovative tools to help you achieve the level of customer satisfaction you desire.

We polled 1,000 patients in the United States to find out how they feel about various healthcare technology, so you can figure out which software and tools to prioritize for your patients.

Patient portals, EHR and Telemedicine, are the most familiar healthcare technologies.

Many technologies and practices operate behind the scenes to make patients’ lives easier. However, we wanted to focus on patient-facing technologies to gauge how familiar patients were with each of them. Our goal is to measure the best bang for the buck investment for moderately sized organizations.

To that end, we asked the patients how familiar they are with various patient-facing healthcare technologies in our survey. Here’s what we found:

Patient portals

Over half of our sample body were “very familiar” with patient portals, meaning they had used them before. This is great news for doctors and practices looking to engage their patients better.

Some benefits of patient portals include;

  • Improved patient/doctor relationships
  • Better clinical outcomes
  • Optimized workflow

Moreover, patient portals allow patients to take on more of an active role in their healthcare. For example, patient portals enable users to self-schedule appointments, view their health information (e.g., lab results and medical histories), see their bills and easily make payments, and manage prescriptions.

Electronic Health Records

We love EHR’s after all; we’re name NewsEHR. And it turns out, so do patients: 56% say they are very familiar with this software, and that’s not surprising when you consider the widespread adoption of EHRs among healthcare providers. A few of the benefits of using EHRs include:

  • Less time spent on simple processes
  • Improved delivery of care
  • Easier data collection
  • Better organization

Telemedicine

OK, as amazing as EHR’s are, the technology trend that is telemedicine has been the real MVP for patients—especially in the past year, thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Patients love telemedicine. They have for a while now, but the use and familiarity with telemedicine have grown exponentially since March 2020. Just a few of the benefits of telemedicine for patients include:

  • Quick access to care without having to leave their house
  • Reduced wait times
  • Improved quality of patient care

While the pandemic is winding down, it’s clear that patients will continue to enjoy the advantages and convenience of telehealth, so medical providers will be wise to carry on this service in 2021 and beyond.

Communication and access to healthcare information have been most improved by new technologies.

In this interconnected world of ours, introducing new technology will often have more benefits than initially intended. So, we wanted to know how technology as a whole has influenced patient satisfaction.

Patients’ growing desire for control over their personal healthcare experience is shown in the top two responses to this question: communication with doctors (55 percent) and access to healthcare data (51 percent).

In a survey conducted in 2019, 97% of patients said they’d prefer providers who engage in shared decision-making.

This is great news for doctors. According to research, patients’ treatment and results increase when they play a more active part in decision-making. As a result, investing in technologies like patient portals that encourage people to be more involved in their treatment is a fantastic approach to enhancing the patient experience.

The Future of A.I in healthcare is bright

Artificial intelligence has been a hot subject in the healthcare industry for a long time—from diagnostic algorithms to machine learning that enables decision support. However, the most well-known are chatbots and virtual assistants powered by AI regarding patient-facing AI technologies.

Close to half of the patients in our survey have interacted with these types of chatbots themselves.

We also questioned patients about how confident they are in AI’s ability to enhance healthcare.

It turns out that the vast majority of people trust artificial intelligence when it comes to their healthcare. This is fantastic news for physicians since AI has made life simpler for both healthcare workers and patients.

Even something as basic as incorporating an AI-based chatbot or virtual assistant into your practice’s website or patient portal may boost patient response rates and give real-time help to those who need it.
